Job Title: Optometrist

Job Summary:


The Optometrist is required to examine the eyes and visual system to detect defects in vision or the visual system and ocular abnormalities, such as but not limited to, glaucoma, cataracts and conjunctivitis, make health assessments, offer clinical advice, prescribe spectacle lenses and contact lenses and refer patients for further treatment when necessary.
Repsonsibilites

  • Document patient history, including complaints and relevant symptoms, ocular health, medication usage, medical and family history, especially health conditions that may affect the eyes. Record current aided and unaided vision as necessary and any other pertinent data.
  • Review the company’s visual needs assessment form and communicate with the patient to get additional details about his/her ocular history.
  • Examine eyes using observation, pharmaceutical agents and instruments to determine the health of the eyes, visual perception, acuity, coordination and focus. Tests may include subjective refractions, depth perception, colour vision tests, retinoscopy, focimetry, ophthalmoscopy, slit lamp examination, visual fields, pupil and mobility testing, dilation, Cycloplegic refractions, gonioscopy, tear function testing and any other tests deemed to be necessary that are within their scope of practise.
  • Based on the examination results, prescribe and fit vision aides such as spectacle lenses and contact lenses when required.
  • Provide any necessary vision therapy to improve visual issues.
  • Refer patients to Ophthalmologists, General Practitioners or other health professionals when a more holistic eye care or treatment plan is required.
  • Educate and counsel patients on contact lens care, visual hygiene, lighting arrangements and safety factors.
  • Recommend and develop a treatment plan when required.
  • Offer advice and reassurance about vision-related matters.
  • Maintain communication with Ophthalmologists, optical and support staff or any other health professional to optimize quality clinical care and service.
  • Clearly document findings and clinical plan, including referrals, spectacle prescriptions, contact lens prescriptions, recommended eye drops and any other advice given.

Qualifications and Experience:

Candidates must possess a BSc Optometry or Optometrist Professional designation from recognized institution and registered with the Medical Council of Guyana.

One (1) year practical experience will be an asset.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Candidate should possess excellent communication skills, strong customer service attributes and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical thinking, attention to details, problem solving and ability to plan and organize are essential capabilities.
  • Sound judgement in recommending the best eye care treatment for patients is required.
  • A high level of confidentiality is expected.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office is acceptable.

Job Title: Dispensing Optician
Job Summary:

The Dispensing Optician is accountable for facilitating the selection, fit and functionality of prescription lenses, frames and related solutions in accordance with the patient’s prescription.

The Dispensing Optician is expected to provide that a high level of professional service to all customers by dispensing eyewear and other optical aids in accordance with professional standards.

General management of the store will is a responsibility of the position at the onset of the store.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that the most suitable lenses have been selected as it relates to: design, materials, coatings and treatments, factoring in prescription analysis and patient’s lifestyle and visual needs.
  • Ensures that the most suitable frames have been chosen as it relates to prescription / facial analysis, lifestyle and aesthetics.
  • Takes facial and frame measurements which may include some or all of the following: Pupillary Distance (PD’s), Mono PD’s, Optical Centers (OC’s), Bifocal / Trifocal Segment Heights, Progressive heights. Frame measurements: A, B, ED, and DBL. Any other necessary measurements as per lens design.
  • Fits and Adjusts eyewear / optical aids to ensure patient comfort and eyewear’s maximum performance. Recommends tints and special coatings to patients in accordance with their eye care needs, lifestyle, prescriptions and frame.
  • Ensures that all jobs returned from the Lab conform to the requirements stated on the job card and that the workmanship is of the highest standard.
  • Ensures that maintenance of patients’ spectacle records in keeping with professional training on accuracy, thoroughness, relevance and orderliness.
  • Manages and ensures that the dispensary maintains an adequate supply of consumables to provide aftercare services and repairs.
  • Attends to customers in a prompt, professional and efficient manner by offering the highest level of dispensing service in accordance with the standards set by professional registration bodies.
  • Attends to customers who may be experiencing visual, fitting or adjustments challenges with eyewear.
  • Liaises with the optometrist to provide the best visual solution for the patient and guides the CSR’s in appropriate frame choice as necessary.
  • Work with members of the branch team to attain sales targets.

Qualifications & Experience:


Consideration will be given to the following categories of candidates:

  • Qualified Candidates:
    Dispensing Optician professional designation from approved institutions.
    One (1) year practical experience as a qualified / registered optician.
    Registered with the Medical Council of Guyana.
  • Candidates who possess:
    Certificate in refraction
    Two (2) years practical experience in an optical environment
  • Candidates currently pursuing Dispensing Optician Professional designation from approved institutions with a minimum of CAPE Grade 2 or higher in Mathematics, Biology or Physics.

Skills/Competencies:

  • Analytical thinking, attention to details, problem solving and ability to plan and organize are essential capabilities.
  • Sound judgement in recommending the best eye care treatment for patients is required.
  • Ability to respond effectively to common inquiries or complaints from customer.
  • A high level of confidentiality is expected.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic team environment is essential.
  • Working knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook; familiarity of iOS (Apple Devices) would be an asset.
